Managing the Dynamics of Difference

Cultural fluency begins with changing the way we think about who we are. It's acting to remove the fears and biases that create barriers, and then engaging across cultures in ways that create sustainable relationships.

We design and deliver cultural fluency training that breaks down barriers of race and cultural differences. We facilitate conversations that lead to stronger and more positive connections through intercultural understanding. We give people the tools and confidence to build more authentic cross-cultural collaborative relationships.

The Model of Cultural Fluency is a six-stage learning model that provides a broad framework for increased understanding. People learn how culture influences bias and perceptions aross racial and cultural boundaries; how we interact and communicate with others; and how we work together to find solutions.

"CFF is unlike any other group I’ve been a part of. It is a community, an experience, a resource, and an education where I know Black children will always be prioritized. CFF has helped me shift my mindset, break out of comfort zones, self-reflect more, engage in important conversations, overhaul my values, and elevate the excellence of Black people."

"CFF has exposed and changed my biases, helped me see and celebrate Black people, center my child, heal my trauma, and make informed choices about schools, locations, work, and more. It has highlighted the importance of self-love and affirmations and helped me challenge lies in myself and others."
michelle e.
"CFF is the best group for helping white parents center Black children. It has helped me build relationships with Black people and understand Black culture. I have learned a lot about white supremacy culture and my own flawed ideas. I continue to evaluate my thinking to correct it."

Why work with us?

You should work with us because we consistently get results. Culturally Fluent Families is the best choice because we provide a tailored, effective approach to addressing the complexities of parenting across racial and cultural lines.

Our methods emphasize real-world application and immediate impact, ensuring that parents gain practical skills that can be used in various situations.

By focusing on the emotional well-being of children and fostering genuine cross-cultural connections, we deliver results that make a meaningful difference in the lives of families.

Identity Focused

We focus on racial identy development. By supporting the cultural needs of children in transracial adoptions we teach parents to navigate and affirm their child's racial identity as a protective factor. Our programs provide deep insights into cutural connections and experiences that foster a positive sense of identity and belonging.

Child-Centered Approach

We teach parents to center the child.  It sounds simple but parents find this is a siezmic shift in thinking that requires parents to examine long heald beliefs, release biases, and make choices that support their well-being. This includes guidance on decisions about where to live, which schools to attend, dealing with familiy members, and engaging with communities to ensure your child feels supported and valued.

Confidence Building

Parents who work with us are more comfortable and confident dealing with cross-cultural issues and concerns. We help parents develop the emotional capacity and relational skills needed to confidently support their children. Our programs address overcoming discomfort and unfamiliarity, encouraging parents to engage with the Black community and build supportive networks for their children.

Our Courses

Getting an understanding of how early racial socialization both begins and solidifies was really eye-opening. I think I’ll be processing the info from the class for a long time.

I had a wonderful experience in the Atlanta class. We really enjoyed Valarie's style of teaching through story telling - it made the time fly by. We are still digesting all that we learned and are looking forward to applying it. We are very grateful for helping us realize what is blocking us from doing better and for the opportunity to meet other local families. We highly recommend the class to everyone!

Parenting Through Race, Culture, and Adoption

I really appreciate the workbook. It is detailed and full of information, questions to help guide and shape my own thinking, and calls to action. It was great to be able to listen to other people's questions and processing out loud, because sometimes someone asked a question that I didn't know I had, and Ms. Valarie always answers in a way that both gives the information and stretches me to think of something else.

Ages and Stages of Racial Identity Development

For me as a public educator, it was very eye opening about the perpetual cycle that the public education system keeps reinforcing. I have to take accountability for my role in that and actively be working to break the cycle.

Two teachings that stand out among many are: 1. The idea of building the brick house for my son, rather than the straw one he currently resides in, and 2. Holding the truth that we all need a sense of belonging, and so many other things then come from this.
